Two things break slabs in this area: a weak base and freeze-thaw. Skip the compaction and the slab settles and cracks as the fill consolidates. Skip air-entrainment on anything exposed and the surface scales the first hard winter.   • Five to six inches with heavier rebar for garages, shops, RV pads, and anything carrying vehicles or equipment.
  • Rebar or wire mesh sized and spaced to the load, kept up on chairs so the steel sits inside the slab, not on the dirt.
  • A vapor barrier under interior and enclosed slabs to keep ground moisture from wicking up through the concrete.

Overbuild the base and steel and a slab lasts generations. Underbuild them to save a little now and you pay for a tear-out later.

Plan for what you'll park, not what you park today

The cheapest upgrade on any slab is thickness and steel at pour time. If there's any chance a shop slab will someday hold a lift, or a pad will park a bigger RV, tell us now. Adding a couple of inches and heavier rebar during the pour costs a fraction of demolishing and repouring an undersized slab down the road.

What affects the cost of a slab

Square footage is only the starting point. What really moves a slab's price:

  • Thickness and reinforcement — heavier loads mean more concrete and more steel.
  • Site prep — clearing, excavation, tear-out of an old slab, and base building.
  • Grade and drainage — leveling a sloped site and directing water away.
  • Access — how easily the truck and crew reach the pour.
  • Finish and extras — a broom finish is standard; a smooth trowel finish or a future coating changes the prep.

Finishing and protecting your slab

Most utility slabs get a broom finish for grip and easy maintenance. If the slab is going in a garage, shop, or basement, ask about a garage floor coating — an epoxy or polyaspartic system that seals the concrete, resists oil and hot tires, and wipes clean. A coating goes on best over a properly finished slab, so it is worth deciding early. Building the whole structure?
